FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs) |
|---|
I understand I have legal obligations with regard to transportation and disposal legislation.
What are they and how do I make sure that I am compliant?
There is legislation to ensure that hazardous goods are packaged and transported safely. There is also legislation covering labelling, carrier registration and the use of waste transfer notes. Banner Chemicals Services will cover all these points on your behalf - all paperwork, labelling and packaging that is required is included in our standard charges.
What is Premises registration all about?
The Hazardous Waste Regulations (England and Wales) 2005 require all producers of Hazardous Waste to register their premises. If you are a manufacturer, there is no exemption if you produce hazardous waste - and you almost certainly do (fluorescent tubes). It's not particularly expensive but you cannot dispose of Hazardous Waste without it.
Why am I being asked to register?
The Environment Agency, as a matter of policy, has decided to shift the focus of regulation to the waste producer. AS a registered hazardous waste producer you are exposed to ad hoc auditing from the Agency and they have the power to impose spot fines for breaches - including not filling in the paperwork correctly!
Section 62's are defunct under the new regulations - do I pay for paperwork?
Yes and no. Whilst the new Consignment Note is free in itself, the requirements for payment by the Consignee (IWM) to the Environment Agency and the massively increased administrative burden of the new regulations dictate that an administration charge of £65.00 will be levied for each and every consignment collected
How quickly can you move my waste?
As fast as we can complete the characterisation process (how much do you know about your waste). In practice this can take several days.
I need a quotation urgently - how fast can you respond?
How about immediately? Our web based portal allows for instant feedback and automated collection process.
I store my waste in 205 litre drums: unfortunately I have no fork lift truck available. What do you suggest?
Be it a van-sized job, or an 88 drum load, IWM can provide the equipment to self-load. We were the first waste operator to offer the Moffet Mountie self-load waste collection service to UK industry.
How do I know my waste is safe in your hands?
IWM has access to the largest facility of its type in the U.K. It is recognised by the Environment Agency as Best Available Technology (BAT). Our environmental performance is the best available in the Hazardous Waste sector. Our approach to managing your waste is to deliver maximum transparency - hence, online viewing of the operation, the Crow's Nest itself and our unique ability to provide you, the waste producer, with a Consignor Report within 48 hours of collection allowing you to monitor any potential issues.
That's all very well but I remain unconvinced?
Come and audit the facility. But to get some real perspective, audit one of our competitors first. You will be impressed.
So what exactly do you do with waste materials at this Waste Transfer & Recycling facility?

The ultimate disposal options for difficult and hazardous waste in the UK are limited. Simplistically, these boil down to:-
|
|---|
Do I need to know exactly where my waste ends up?
Technically, no. The issue is your Duty of Care which can be entirely satisfied by demonstrably checking us out and being assured of our professionalism. (This is according to the Government guidelines to Section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act).
But am I not responsible from cradle to grave?
Technically, yes. But given that your Duty of Care responsibility ends with us, and that your waste processes through our operation and loses its identity, you have fulfilled your legal obligations and can sleep safe at night
I'm not convinced; I need to know where my waste ends up. How do I find out?
We can provide you with detailed disposal information. Our in-house digital processing and paperless systems are unique to the industry and allow detailed audit trailing at the press of a button. Obviously, for new jobs we have to make certain assumptions in advance, but within two hours of reaching our facility, we can (and do) generate a detailed summary of disposal. The IWM experience offers 100% transparency and an up to date list of the final disposal sites is maintained on our web site (www.bannerservices.co.uk).
All well and good, but are you really this efficient?
Come and see us and judge for yourself. For an independent professional reference, we can put you in touch with our local Environment Agency office.
I take it, then, that you have never had any prosecutions?
Correct.
I'm convinced - how do I open an account?
Logon at www.bannerservices.co.uk
Can you supply a Certificate of Disposal?
The Consignor Report required under the Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005 provides the function of the old Certificate of Disposal.
